The Tea Plantations of Hatton, Sri Lanka

Hatton, located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, is a town shaped by its connection to the tea industry and the surrounding natural beauty. Known primarily as a gateway to Adam’s Peak, a pilgrimage site for many religions, Hatton offers much more than its proximity to the sacred mountain.

The area is dominated by vast tea plantations, originally established during British colonial rule in the 19th century. These estates are now operated by major companies such as Dilmah and Lipton or private owners. The tea fields are tended by Tamil workers, descendants of those brought to Sri Lanka by the British to work on the plantations. Their daily lives revolve around plucking tea leaves, often starting early in the morning and continuing for hours under the tropical sun. Many live in modest housing within the estates, forming close-knit communities where traditions and cultural practices are preserved.

Beyond the tea fields, Hatton’s landscapes include waterfalls and hidden trails that remain untouched by mass tourism. The region’s waterfalls are not just scenic but also integral to the lives of locals, providing water for agriculture and daily needs. During the dry season, the exposed rock formations and flowing streams create an ideal environment for exploration and photography.

The town of Hatton itself reflects the rhythms of a community deeply connected to its environment. Small markets, local businesses, and the bustling activity of tuk-tuks and buses give a glimpse into daily life. Despite its role in the tea industry, Hatton remains relatively quiet and unspoiled, offering a unique perspective on Sri Lanka’s hill country.

This series captures Hatton’s tea plantations, the workers’ routines, and the waterfalls that define the region’s natural beauty. It aims to document a place where history, culture, and nature converge in an authentic and understated way.
